Martin L Engman, MD
Dr. Martin Engman has over 15 years of experience researching and assessing mortality and morbidity risks in the
insurance industry. Over that time he has demonstrated his ability to bring effective and creative solutions to
complex problems.
He is a clear and effective communicator and is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings. In
addition, he is an excellent writer, authoring numerous articles and serving as editor of two trade publications
as well as having been editor-in-chief of the Journal of Insurance Medicine.
Dr. Engman received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Minnesota. He is board certified in internal
medicine, pulmonary disease, critical care medicine, sleep disorders, and insurance medicine. Before joining the
insurance industry, he practiced clinical medicine for over 10 years and was the medical director of the Wisconsin
Sleep Disorders Center and on the teaching staff of the Gundersen Clinic.
Dr. Engman is skilled in various analytical techniques including life table analysis and Markov modeling. He
has been one of two primary developers of two of the insurance industry’s most foremost life underwriting manuals
and previously had been the primary developer of the industry's leading long-term care, income disability and medical expense
underwriting manuals.
Dr. Engman was Vice President of Research and Senior Medical Director at ING Re. He teaches the American Academy
of Insurance Medicine’s Mortality Methodology Course as well as their introductory course on mortality analysis.
He has served on the Executive Council of the American Academy of Insurance Medicine (AAIM) and has been repeatedly
on the faculty of AAIM’s Triennial Insurance Medicine Board Review Course.
